Resolution or evolution
It’s a funny time of year. Many of us have one foot in the past, and the other in the future. It’s a time of deep reflection of the year gone by. What did you learn? What did you gain? What dd you leave behind? It’s also a time of imagining the possibilities of the future.
Unsurprisingly, this time of year there’s a spike of new clients walking through the clinic doors. They’ve finally decided to make a change in their health. Finally, they want to get on top of their gut issues. Finally, they feel ready to work on their food allergies. This year is the year they will finally feel better.
It’s an exciting time of year with lots of new faces and new health goals.
But more often than not, the excitement wears off. Those resolutions we’d set for ourselves quickly lose their fire and find themselves at the bottom of a very long to-do list; the same place they resided last year, and the year before that.
So, how do we overcome this? How do we change resolution into evolution?
By now, many of us know about SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Many of us know how to make goals, but that isn’t usually the problem. The problem is sticking to the goals. Staying on track.
One of the most important things to consider when shifting from resolution to evolution and staying on track is why. Why do you want to achieve this goal? Why do you want to stop this habit? Why do you want to lose weight or improve your immune system?
I find for my clients who can’t answer the why, they will often struggle the most with getting the health on track. Now, a why doesn’t have to be huge. Your why doesn’t have to be “so I can qualify for UTMB or Kona” or “so I never get a cold again”. Your why needs be only relevant and important to you. Maybe you want to get your gut under control so you can throw dinner parties without anxiety or stress over flare-ups. Maybe you want to get your immune system strong so you can go to the snow in winter and not spend the whole time in bed with a cold. Maybe your why is you are truly sick of feeling burnt out and tired, and you want more energy to enjoy weekends with friends and family. It’s not what the why is that’s important but it is making sure you have one.
So, this resolution season I encourage you to take a moment. Do you want to make a resolution or an evolution? Do you want to level up your health and wellness, knowing exactly why you’re doing it, with purpose and hard work? Or are you reciting the resolutions that you think people want to hear you make?
If you’re ready to ditch the resolution and start your personal evolution, you can reach out to me for a 1:1 consultation here. I can’t wait to see where this next year takes you.
